Greg Caldwell, OD, FAAO

Greg Caldwell, OD, is a 1995 graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He completed a one-year residency in primary care and ocular disease at The Eye Institute in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry (ABO).

He currently works in Duncansville and Johnstown, Pennsylvania as an ocular disease consultant. Dr. Caldwell’s primary focus is the diagnosis and management of anterior and posterior segment ocular disease and he has been a participant in multiple FDA investigations. Dr. Caldwell has lectured extensively throughout the county and over twelve countries internationally. In 2010 he served as President of the Pennsylvania Optometric Association (POA) and served on the AOA Board of Trustees 2013-2016. He is President of the Blair/Clearfield Association for the Blind.

Joseph Sowka, OD, FAAO, Diplomate

Dr. Sowka is a Professor of Optometry at Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry where he serves as Chief of The Advanced Care Service and Director of the Glaucoma Service at the College’s Eye Institute. He is also Chair of the Department of Optometric Sciences. He is the longest tenured faculty member at the College.

Dr. Sowka is a founding member of both the Optometric Glaucoma Society and Optometric Retina Society. He is also the Chair of the Neuro-Ophthalmic Disorders in Optometry Special Interest Group for the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Sowka is a Glaucoma Diplomate of the American Academy of Optometry. He is the lead author of the annual Handbook of Ocular Disease Management published by Review of Optometry.

Tracy Offerdahl, PharmD, BPharm, RPh

Dr. Offerdahl attended Temple University School of Pharmacy in Philadelphia, PA, for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees. Upon completion of her Doctor of Pharmacy degree, she completed a Residency at Temple University Hospital, where much of her time was spent in internal medicine and infectious diseases.

She is currently on faculty at Salus University in the Department of Optometry, where she is the course director and instructor for all systemic pharmacology courses for students in the optometry, audiology, and physician assistant programs. Additionally, she is a practicing clinical pharmacist with a pharmacy and a patient care practice site in Rosemont, PA.

Dr. Offerdahl is currently earning another degree in holistic medicine, as well as additional certifications in veterinary pharmacy. She lectures extensively in the optometry community.

Nancy J. Newman, OD

Dr. Nancy J. Newman is the LeoDelle Jolley Professor of Ophthalmology, Professor of Ophthalmology and Neurology and Instructor in Neurological Surgery at the Emory University School of Medicine, where she serves as the Director of Neuro-Ophthalmology.  She attended Princeton University, the University of London on a Marshall Scholarship, and Harvard Medical School.  She trained in Internal Medicine and Neurology at the Massachusetts General Hospital where she was Chief Resident in Neurology, and in Neuro-Ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.  She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurological Association, and the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society.  She was President of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society from 2014 to 2016, Chair of the Board of Directors from 2016 to 2018, and is now Senior Vice President for Education. She served on the Editorial Boards of the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Seminars in Neurology, Journal of the Neurological Sciences and the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology.  She has over 500 publications, including scientific articles, book chapters and books, including the primary textbook in Neuro-Ophthalmology, Walsh & Hoyt’s Clinical Neuro-Ophthalmology, 5th and 6th Editions, and the popular manual Neuro-Ophthalmology Illustrated, 1st, 2nd and 3rd Editions.  She has lectured widely throughout the world and is known for her innovative teaching style.  Her main research interests include disorders of the optic nerve and mitochondrial diseases.  She is a Trustee Emerita of the Board of Trustees of Princeton University and also served as President of the Princeton University Alumni Association.

Valerie Biousse, MD

Valerie Biousse, MD is the Cyrus H. Stoner Professor of Ophthalmology, and is Professor of Ophthalmology and Neurology in the section of neuro-ophthalmology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA, USA. She serves as Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Department of Ophthalmology at Emory University. Dr. Biousse is a fellow of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society and of the French Society of Neurology and a member of the American Neurological Association, and multiple other national and international societies, including the American Academies of Ophthalmology and Neurology and the French Society of Ophthalmology. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology as Associate Editor and on the editorial board of Current Opinion in Neurology. She currently also serves on the board of directors as President Elect of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society. She has more than 400 publications, including scientific articles, book chapters and books, including the primary textbook Neuro-Ophthalmology and Walsh & Hoyt’s Clinical Neuro-Ophthalmology, 6th Edition, 2005, and the didactic textbook Neuro-Ophthalmology Illustrated (Thieme, 2009, 2016 and 2019 –awarded “best Neurology book of the year” by the British Medical Association in 2016 and received the “PROSE award” from the American Association of Publishers in 2017). Her current research focuses on four primary areas: (1) idiopathic intracranial hypertension, (2) the use of non-mydriatic fundus photography for the diagnosis of neuro-ophthalmic disease in various clinical settings, (3) diagnostic errors and referral patterns in neuro-ophthalmology, and (4) ocular manifestations of cerebrovascular diseases.

Robert Hasty, DO, FACOI, FACP

Dr. Hasty attended the University of Miami where he completed his undergraduate studies with honors as a triple science major in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Chemistry and Biology in 1996. He then went on to receive his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2000. He subsequently trained at Mt. Sinai Medical Center where he completed his training in Internal Medicine while receiving the Resident of the Year award for three straight years as well as receiving the Howard Kane Resident of the Year, being the first osteopathic physician ever to win that award in over forty years of academic medical training at Mt. Sinai. He also served as Chief Intern as well as Chief Resident during his training.

Dr. Hasty began his career as a Hospitalist & Internist for Cogent Healthcare at Lee Memorial Health Systems in Fort Myers, FL. He soon became Associate Lead Physician for Cogent Healthcare. Dr. Hasty had what he described as a “calling” to become an academic physician and joined NSU College of Osteopathic Medicine in March 2005. He served as the Founding Program Director of the Palmetto General Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program and helped develop several other graduate medical education programs. He also served as the Vice Chair of the Internal Medicine Department at NSU. He was awarded the NSU Stuey Award for Co-Curricular Advisor of the Year in 2009. He was the recipient of the coveted Golden Apple Award by the graduation class of NSU-COM in 2008 and again in 2009 and 2011. Dr. Hasty was also named as a member of the “40 under 40” in 2009 by Gold Coast Magazine because of his service to the South Florida community.

In 2013, Dr. Hasty became the Vice President of Medical Education and the Regional Associate Dean and later as Associate Dean for Postgraduate Affairs for Campbell University Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine in North Carolina. During his tenure at Campbell University, he created 383 residency positions in 20 programs at 7 organizations and led the university to be awarded the AOA STAR award for the strategic planning that has created medical education opportunities in North Carolina for the next generation of osteopathic physicians. He has served on various boards, including the American College of Osteopathic Internists and the Association of Osteopathic Directors and Medical Educators. Dr. Hasty was the Founding Dean and Chief Academic Officer of the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine (ICOM), Idaho’s first medical school. He currently serves as the Founding Dean & Chief Academic Officer for Kansas Health Science Center developing their proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Hasty is board certified in internal medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists as well as the American College of Physicians.

Lori Vollmer, OD, MS, FAAO

Dr. Lori Vollmer earned her undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida in 1990. Following graduation, she worked as a certified ophthalmic technician for eight years until pursuing a career in optometry in 1998. She graduated with honors and distinction from Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry in 2002. She completed a residency in ocular disease at the Aran Eye Associates in Miami, Florida in July 2003. She completed a Masters’ of Science in Nutrition from the Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2018 with an emphasis in Sports Nutrition.

Dr. Vollmer is currently a Professor of Optometry and Director of Residency Programs for Nova Southeastern University. She also serves as the Program Coordinator for the Primary Care and Ocular Disease Residency Programs at Nova Southeastern University.

Her professional interests lie in ocular disease, nutrition and wellness. She is an attending optometric physician at the Eye Care Institute in Broward as well as the Director of the Diabetes and Macula Service at the NSU Eye Clinic. Her lecturing interests involve ocular disease, trauma, medical and surgical management and nutrition. She teaches a course in Nutrition and Eye Care within the optometric curriculum at NSUCO.

Dr. Vollmer is a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry, Fellow in the Optometric Retina Society, member of the Optometric Wellness and Nutrition Society, member of the American Optometric Association, Member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and member of the Florida Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (FAND).

Dr. Vollmer served on the Board of the Broward County Optometric Association for over 10 years and is a Past President of the BCOA. Dr. Vollmer also serves as a team chair consultant for the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE).
