Greg Caldwell | Optometric Education Consultants

Greg Caldwell, OD, FAAO

Greg Caldwell, OD, is a 1995 graduate of the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He completed a one-year residency in primary care and ocular disease at The Eye Institute in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (AAO) and a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry (ABO).

He currently works in Duncansville and Johnstown, Pennsylvania as an ocular disease consultant. Dr. Caldwell’s primary focus is the diagnosis and management of anterior and posterior segment ocular disease and he has been a participant in multiple FDA investigations. Dr. Caldwell has lectured extensively throughout the county and over twelve countries internationally. In 2010 he served as President of the Pennsylvania Optometric Association (POA) and served on the AOA Board of Trustees 2013-2016. He is President of the Blair/Clearfield Association for the Blind.

Joseph Sowka, OD, FAAO, Diplomate

Dr. Joseph Sowka is an attending optometric physician at Center for Sight in Sarasota and Venice, Florida, a large medical-surgical practice where he focuses on glaucoma and neuro- ophthalmic disease management. He is the residency education coordinator at Center for Sight. He is also Director of Optometric Business Development for US EYE. He was formerly Professor of Optometry at Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry for 28 years where he served numerous academic and administrative roles. Dr. Sowka is a founding member of both the Optometric Glaucoma Society and Optometric Retina Society. He is also the Founder and former Chair of the Neuro-Ophthalmic Disorders in Optometry Special Interest Group for the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. Sowka is a Glaucoma Diplomate of the American Academy of Optometry. In 2021 and 2022, he was ranked #4 optometrist in the US by Newsweek magazine “America’s Best Eye Doctors” list. He is a partner and co-owner of Optometric Education Consultants.

Chris Borgman, O.D.

Dr. Chris Borgman is an associate professor at the Southern College of Optometry. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in biology at Central College in Pella, Iowa and his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Illinois College of Optometry. Following graduation, Dr. Borgman completed a one-year residency in Primary Care and Ocular Disease at the Illinois College of Optometry/Illinois Eye Institute in Chicago, Illinois.

Prior to joining the faculty at SCO, Dr. Borgman spent three years in a multi-doctor, private ophthalmology practice in Des Moines, Iowa which specialized in primary care, ocular disease, cataract surgery, and laser refractive surgery. He is a member of the American Optometric Association (AOA), the Tennessee Association of Optometry Physicians (TAOP), and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. He has authored numerous articles published on the topics of various ocular disease conditions, and has also lectured in many continuing education venues, both nationally and internationally, on the topics of primary care ocular diseases, ocular pharmacology, ocular manifestations of systemic diseases, and neuro-optometric diseases.

Dr. Borgman currently sees patients and supervises students in a clinical setting at The Eye Center at SCO, and also teaches two classroom courses: Systemic Pathology and Integrative Analysis. His areas of professional interest include: primary care and ocular disease, ocular manifestations of systemic disease, and neuro-optometric diseases.

Dr. Borgman enjoys spending time with his wife and three daughters, and is a slow-pitch softball and baseball enthusiast.

Andrew Rixon OD, FAAO, Diplomate (Glaucoma)

Originally from Hartford, CT, Dr. Rixon received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry and completed his postgraduate residency in Family Practice at West Tennessee Eye. Dr. Rixon is currently an attending at the Memphis VAMC, as well as a consulting faculty member at SCO.  Dr. Rixon is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, an AAO diplomate in glaucoma, member of the Optometric Glaucoma Society, on the executive committee of the glaucoma section, frequent lecturer, author, and peer reviewer. He is on the editorial board of Clinical and Refractive Optometry and Clinical Insights in Eyecare. Dr. Rixon has also been an active participant in VOSH, with many medical mission trips to the Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America.

Tania Patel, O.D.

Dr. Tania Patel received her Bachelors in Science and Bachelors in Vision Science from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree at Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry in 2016. Dr. Patel completed her residency in Ocular Disease and Low Vision at the Lexington VA Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky in 2017. Dr. Patel and Dr. Findley co-wrote “Cataract extraction as primary treatment for narrow angle glaucoma” which was published in The journal of New frontiers of Ophthalmology. Dr. Patel is also published in Review of Optometry. In her spare time, she provides eye care for patients at Mission Lexington. She also speaks 3 languages fluently. Dr. Patel joined our team in July 2018.

She is licensed to practice Optometry in the Commonwealth of Kentucky as well as the state of Florida. Dr. Patel is a member of the Kentucky Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association.

Howell M. Findley, O.D.

Dr. Findley completed his undergraduate work in 1977, receiving a B.S. in Biology from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. He then graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry, receiving his B.S. in Physiological Optics in 1979 and his O.D. degree (Doctor of Optometry) in 1981. Dr Findley completed the Optometric Fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida in 1982 and has been in private practice in Lexington, Kentucky, since 1984, when he helped introduce optometric co-management to the Bluegrass.

He has written several articles published in regional and national optometric journals, including a major review of intraocular lens implants, glaucoma, and a chapter on co-management. He was a reviewer for the American Optometric Association’s Cataract Guidelines and has lectured for the Southern Council of Optometrists. He serves and has served as an adjunct clinical professor at Ferris State University College of Optometry, Illinois College of Optometry, Indiana University School of Optometry, Ohio State University School of Optometry, Southern College of Optometry, University of Houston College of Optometry, Nova Southeastern School of Optometry, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry.

Dr. Findley is an active member of the American Optometric Association and of the Kentucky Optometric Association, which recognized him as “Young Optometrist of the Year: 1988-89. He was also recognized as “Optometrist of the Year” in 2006.

Both Dr. Ferguson and Dr. Findley have been named to the Outstanding Young Men of America and elected to the Kentucky Colonels for volunteer work associated with Vision U.S.A./The Kentucky Vision Project, which provides surgical and medical services for the working indigent.
